Twenty games, all made of words

Wordwell is a small collection of word games: guessing games, anagrams, a word search, a cryptogram, and quizzes on spelling, meaning and grammar. They are HTML5 games, which simply means they run in your web browser. There is nothing to download, and they work on a phone as well as on a computer.

For players of any age

Some of these games are old friends. Letter Guess and the Word Search have been played on paper for generations. Others, like Five Tries, are newer favourites. The quizzes in the Know section are aimed at anyone who wants to sharpen their English, whether that is a child learning to spell or an adult who still hesitates over "its" and "it's".

Each game has an on-screen keyboard or large buttons, so you never need to wrestle with your phone's own keyboard, except in the Type Test, where typing is the point.

Words you can trust

The puzzles use everyday words. Hidden answers are common nouns and familiar sayings, not dictionary curiosities. Where a game needs to check what you have typed, it uses a list of about fifteen thousand English words, with both British and American spellings accepted.

Your record

When you finish a game, the result is noted on its tile: your best score, or how many times you have solved it. That record is kept in your own browser. We do not ask you to sign up and we never see it.

Where to start

If you have two minutes, try Unscramble. If you have ten, settle in with the Cryptogram. And if you would like to learn something, Spell Check will find the words you have been getting wrong for years.
