About Word Recall
Word Recall is a test of short-term memory. You see a short list, it is taken away, and then the game tries to catch you out with words that sound as if they could have been there.
How it works
Seven words appear together, with a bar that empties over eight seconds. When the time is up, they vanish.
You are then shown ten words in turn. Five were on the list. Five were not. For each one, answer yes or no. The game tells you straight away whether you were right, and gives a score out of ten at the end.
All the words, both real and false, come from the same pool of everyday nouns, so the wrong ones are just as plausible as the right ones.
Remembering more
Seven items is close to the limit of what most people can hold in mind at once, which is exactly why the game uses that number. A few methods make it much easier.
Make a picture. Take the words and build one silly scene from them: a penguin in the kitchen, holding a candle, sitting on a tractor. An image with everything in it is far stickier than a list.
Tell a story. Link each word to the next in a sentence, however ridiculous.
Group them. If three are animals and two are things you find indoors, remember "three animals, two indoor things, two others", then the items in each group.
Say them. Reading the words under your breath uses your hearing as well as your sight.
Read the whole list twice in the eight seconds, not one word slowly.
When you are tested, trust a clear "no". If a word brings nothing to mind at all, it was probably not there.
Eight out of ten is good. Among HTML5 games, it is a tidy little experiment on your own memory.
