About Opposites
Opposites is a quiz on antonyms: hot and cold, early and late, borrow and lend. You are given one half of a pair and asked to find the other.
How it works
A word appears with four possible answers. Tap the one that means the reverse. The correct choice is highlighted in green, and after ten questions you see your score.
The game holds fifty-eight pairs. Some are among the first words anyone learns, like "up" and "down". Others need more care, such as "guilty" and "innocent", "generous" and "mean", or "increase" and "decrease". Any pair may be asked either way round.
The wrong answers come from other pairs, so they are always real words, and now and then one will be close enough to make you hesitate.
Thinking about opposites
Find the true reverse, not just something different. The opposite of "arrive" is "leave". "Forget" is different from "arrive" too, but it is not its opposite.
Match the kind of word. If you are shown a describing word such as "shallow", the answer will describe as well: "deep". If you are shown an action, look for an action.
Watch for words with two meanings. "Light" can be the opposite of "dark" or of "heavy". "Mean" can be the opposite of "generous". Let the choices guide you to the sense intended.
Try the "not" test. If "not rich" means roughly the same as one of the options, that option is the answer.
Think in pairs you already know. Many opposites are learned together: "push and pull", "buy and sell", "win or lose". Saying the given word followed by "and" often brings its partner to mind.
It is a quick round, well suited to children and to English learners, and among the most approachable HTML5 games we have.
