Odd Word Out

Four words. Three belong together. Find the one that does not.

About Odd Word Out

Odd Word Out is a sorting game played in your head. Three of the four words share something: they are all fruits, or tools, or things you wear. The fourth is an intruder. Spot it.

How it works

Read the four words and tap the odd one. The correct answer turns green, and a line underneath tells you what the other three had in common. After ten questions, you get your score.

The words are drawn from ten groups: fruit, animals, colours, tools, weather, parts of the body, clothes, kitchen things, musical instruments and transport. Each question takes three from one group and one from another, so the combinations rarely repeat.

There is no clock. It is a game about being right, not being fast.

Getting it right

Find the group first. Do not look for the odd word directly. Look for what most of the words have in common, and the outsider reveals itself.

Start with any two. Pick two words and ask what links them. Then test the other two against that idea. If one fits and one does not, you are done. If neither fits, your first pair was the wrong starting point.

Be careful with words that have two meanings. A "drum" is an instrument and also a kind of container. A "bowl" is a thing and also an action. Go with the sense that fits the other words.

Read all four before you tap. The intruder is sometimes the first word, and it is easy to assume the first word sets the theme.

This is a good game for young children building their vocabulary, and for anyone learning English, because it teaches words in families. It is one of the calmer HTML5 games here, and a perfect score is within anyone's reach.
