Unscramble

A word has been jumbled. Put its letters back in order, as many times as you can in a minute.

About Unscramble

Unscramble is an anagram race. A common word of five, six or seven letters has had its letters shuffled. Sort them out, and another appears. The clock gives you one minute.

How it works

Tap a letter tile to move it up to the answer row. Tap a letter in the answer row to send it back. On a keyboard, just type, and use Backspace to undo.

As soon as every letter is placed, the game checks it. If your answer is right, you score and move on. If the letters make a different real word from the one intended, that counts too: "night" and "thing" are both accepted for the same tiles. If it is not a word, the tiles drop back and you try again.

The skip button shows you the answer and deals a new word, at a cost of three seconds.

Solving anagrams faster

Pull out common pairs. Look for TH, CH, SH, ER, ST, QU and double letters. Treat the pair as one piece and there is less to arrange.

Find the ending. Many words finish in E, Y, ER or a consonant followed by E. Placing the last two letters first often reveals the rest.

Separate vowels from consonants in your head. English words tend to alternate, so a jumble like "RCAIH" starts to look like "chair" once you see C-H around A-I.

Try a different first letter. If nothing comes, mentally start the word with each consonant in turn.

Know when to skip. Staring at one word for fifteen seconds costs far more than the three-second penalty.

Do not type too fast. A slip in the middle of a word means clearing the row.

Seven or eight words in a minute is quick. It is one of the most replayable HTML5 games on the site.
